SEASONAL DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM

Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from our body by neutralizing or transforming them so they can be efficiently eliminated. Normally our body creates toxins on a biochemical and cellular level and if these substances are not eliminated, they can cause irritation and inflammation in our cells and tissues, blocking normal function. This is when symptoms start to occur. Toxicity occurs when our exposure to harmful chemicals exceeds our ability to eliminate them. The effects that toxins have on our body depend on the type, dosage, frequency, or potency of the toxin. Through this program you will learn what you can do on a daily basis to assist your body’s natural detoxification abilities, while reducing your contact with toxins.

CLEANSING DIET

It is actually our diet that is the greatest determinate of our ability to detoxify, as it is the primary source of the vitamins and minerals required for efficient detoxification. More importantly, the quality of foods we choose to eat greatly affects our health by either supporting the elimination pathways in the body or by adding to our toxic load. This program does not involve fasting because the major detoxification system of the body (P450 enzymes of the liver) requires nutrients such as Vitamin C, B vitamins, selenium, magnesium, sulphur and amino acids like methionine and cysteine to properly function.  When we eat a whole food diet rich in fresh, raw and alkalinizing plant foods, we get the anti-oxidants needed to protect our bodies from oxidative damage caused by circulating toxins. We also get an abundance of the nutrients the liver needs to perform phase 1 and 2 detoxification efficiently. A healthy CLEANSE involves dietary and lifestyle changes that include the removal of processed food from the diet while consuming a vast array of colorful vegetables.

WHAT TO AVOID

During a healthy cleanse, where the emphasis is on the diet, certain foods are excluded, such as caffeine, alcohol, additives, preservatives, GMOs, trans fats and sugar because they stress the P450 mechanisms that the body uses for the biotransformation of toxic chemicals. Non-organic meats and dairy are also excluded as they are a known source of PCBs and xenoestrogens.  Other excluded food items include those that are difficult to digest and increase intestinal permeability of toxic substances.

It seems like today we are exposed to more toxins than our bodies are designed to handle. Until our systems can evolve to keep up, we need to be kind to ourselves.

REPAIR AND ENHANCE DETOXIFICATION:

All of us could use a tune-up for our waste and toxic elimination systems. The key systems of elimination are our digestive tract, liver, kidneys and skin.

DIGESTIVE TRACT

Increasing fiber intake and increasing normal bowel frequency enhances elimination of unwanted toxins from our bodies. High-fiber intake has also been associated with lower cholesterol, as well as lower rates of obesity, diabetes, and colon cancer. Strive to eat at least 30-45 g of fiber daily. You must have one or more bowel movements daily during a cleanse. Constipation means that toxins will simply get reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

Try this:

  • For fibre, add 2 TBSP ground flaxseeds seeds daily to salads, rice, or smoothies.
  • Take ½ lemon in water first thing in the morning to increase bile excretion (bile is a natural laxative).
  • For sluggish bowels use exercise, abdominal massage, flaxseed or hemp oil, ½ cup of unsweetened prune juice and/or Natural Calm (magnesium citrate).
  • Avoid laxative herbs such as senna and cascara!! (Note: These are present in many cleanse kits!)

LIVER

Specific foods and nutrients in supplement form can support the liver’s detoxification process and enhance the elimination of harmful and carcinogenic compounds.

Enjoy the following:

  • Eat two portions of Brassica family vegetables daily, such as watercress, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, kohlrabi, radish, daikon, and Bok Choy.
  • Sulphur rich foods such as cabbage, garlic, onions, and beans.
  • Glutathione-containing food such asparagus, avocados and walnuts.
  • High antioxidant foods such as berries, grapes (always organic), beets, cooked tomatoes, pomegranate and organic green tea.
  • Don’t forget the super powerful turmeric, cilantro and walnuts.

KIDNEYS

Because humans are predominantly composed of water (about 66% by weight for men, about 60% for women), maintaining a continuous intake of clean water and a high rate of urine flow from the kidneys enhances the elimination of unwanted water-soluble compounds. Water intake needs to be at least 64 ounces per day (8 cups). This bare minimum intake represents the amount of water lost by an average-sized person in a single day.

SKIN / LYMPH

The skin is the largest organ of our bodies by weight. Besides protecting us from the outside world and helping to maintain a constant internal temperature and environment, our skin is an active organ of detoxification. Not only does the skin eliminate wastes through the process of sweating, but it completely regenerates itself once a month. The outer layers of skin are constantly being shed, while new layers are being formed below. This shedding process also results in elimination of unwanted compounds from the body. I recommend aerobic exercise for at least thirty minutes four days per week to a level that causes sweating. In addition to exercise, boost your skin’s detoxification capability by using a sauna an additional two to three times weekly. Sweating removes fat soluble toxins such as DDT, dioxins and heavy metals.

Also beneficial to the lymphatic system are dry skin brushing towards the heart with a brush or rough washcloth daily, rebounding or skipping to mechanically move lymph and lymphatic massage.
